This one-day course will help fiction writers to recognize and utilize their most formidable assets—dreams, the subconscious, and visualization. Students will practice techniques that help to unlock creative potential specifically related to writing fiction. The practicalities of craft and revision in relation to a subconscious approach to writing will also be discussed. There will be a series of written exercises that will lead to students writing a piece of fiction, which will be critiqued by the instructor and fellow students in a workshop setting. (The class is geared toward speculative fiction, but is applicable to any type of fiction.)

Jeffrey Ford is the author of the novels Vanitas, The Physiognomy, Memoranda, The Beyond, The Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque, The Cosmology of the Wider World, The Girl in the Glass, and The Shadow Year. His short fiction has been published in three collections, The Fantasy Writer's Assistant, The Empire of Ice Cream, and The Drowned Life. In 2012, his story, "The Drowned Life," will appear in the 2nd edition of The Oxford Book of American Short Stories. His fiction has won The World Fantasy Award, The Nebula Award, The Edgar Allan Poe Award, and Gran Prix de l’Imaginaire. Translations of his novels and stories have appeared in more than 20 languages. Ford has taught fiction writing for the past 15 years at Brookdale Community College in New Jersey and has been a guest lecturer at Clarion Writers Workshop, The Richard Hugo House in Seattle, and the Stonecoast MFA program in Maine. He lives in southern New Jersey with his wife and two sons.
